Job: Black Literatures in English – Assistant Professor, University of Calgary (Application Review Begins: 15 February 2022)

The Department of English in the Faculty of Arts is seeking applicants for a tenure-track appointment in Black Literatures in English at the rank of assistant professor with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2022. 

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in English or a closely related discipline with a specialization in Black Literatures in English. Expertise in Black Canadian Literature is preferred and the ability to teach Black Canadian literature is an asset. Candidates who are near completion of their program will be considered; however, preference will be given to candidates with a completed degree. 

The successful applicant will be expected to establish and/or maintain an active research program with the ability to secure external research funding; produce high impact research and scholarship in the area of specialization; teach graduate and undergraduate courses and supervise graduate and undergraduate students in the Department of English; engage in meaningful service activities within the department, faculty, university and community.

Excellence will be demonstrated in research through such measures as peer-reviewed publications and a track-record of (or potential for) successful grant applications. Evidence of excellent teaching can be demonstrated through course development, teaching effectiveness, pedagogical innovation, and measures used to create an inclusive learning environment.

The Department of English is a research-intensive department with high standards in teaching. We value interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to research and training, and strongly encourage collaboration. Our department has thriving MA and PhD programs, and significant expertise and recognized strengths in Canadian and global English literature, creative writing, new media and digital humanities, popular genre fiction, among other areas including traditional anglophone and historical literary studies.   • A letter of interest that details how you meet the requirements of the position
  • An up-to-date curriculum vitae
  • No more than two samples of scholarly publication
  • A statement of teaching philosophy and a teaching dossier, which must include, at minimum, two sample syllabi and summaries of the quantitative and qualitative results of two sets of course evaluations, if available
  • An equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) statement identifying the applicant’s contributions or potential contributions to advancing a culture of equity and inclusion on the basis of lived experience and understanding of Black peoples and cultures 
  • Names and contact information for three referees
