Event: George Elliott Clarke to read at Books and Biscotti Literary Series on June 3rd @ 4 p.m. Eastern

Books and Biscotti Literary Series
Thursday, June 3rd at 2:00 PM (MT) 4:00 PM (ET)

Joseph Pivato (Athabasca University) is pleased to introduce George Elliott Clarke (University of Toronto) for a presentation titled Assembling the Afro-Metis Syllabus: Some Preliminary Reading.

Clarke explores the self-presentation of those African-Canadian authors who also claim to be part Indigenous. He critically examines the very different receptions of these dualidentity writers among Black-Canadian critics and some Indigenous scholars. His focus is on the arguments presented in published literary texts rather than on questions of political legitimacy or constitutional recognition. He argues that it can be enriching to understand the terms “black” and “Métis” with their affiliations and cross-connections leading to rainbows of cultures.
