Job: Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Literatures of Turtle Island – Western University (Application Review Begins: 15 January 2022)

Western University in London, Ontario is situated on the traditional lands of the Anishinabek, Haudenosaunee, Lūnaapéewak, and Chonnonton Peoples, lands connected with the London Township and Sombra Treaties of 1796, and the Dish with One Spoon Covenant Wampum. In 2016, Western approved its first Indigenous Strategic Plan which seeks to create a community where “Indigenous peoples are engaging in all levels of work, study and research at Western University enriching campus for the benefit of all”. The Plan is now in its implementation phase, and Western is working to increase Indigenous faculty, staff, and student representation alongside the creation of organizational structures and mechanisms that will assist the ongoing engagement of Indigenous peoples. To support these institutional priorities, Western has developed an Office of Indigenous Initiatives (OII) with a senior role reporting to the Provost and is creating a new Indigenous Learning Space. The OII website includes profiles of current Indigenous faculty at Western.

In keeping with Western’s strategic priority of advancing Indigenous education and scholarship, the University is seeking to appoint an Indigenous faculty member to a new Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Department of English and Writing Studies, in the field of Indigenous Literatures of Turtle Island.

The appointment will made at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in a probationary appointment or Associate with tenure, depending upon qualifications and experience. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The anticipated start date will be July 1, 2022, or as negotiated. Pursuant  to Section 14 of the Ontario Human Rights Code, the selection will be limited to Indigenous applicants (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit). Candidates must complete the CRC Chair Application Form and submit it with their application materials.

Review of applications will begin on January 15, 2022.  Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

The successful candidate must have a doctoral degree (or equivalent) in literary studies We are seeking strong emerging scholars with a demonstrated track record of Indigenous research activity and creativity, teaching and service activities that includes the application of Indigenous knowledge and/or ethical engagement and collaboration with Indigenous communities, organizations and/or institutions. Candidates should possess the potential to achieve international recognition and to lead in their field in the next five to ten years.

Candidates considered for appointments with tenure must have an outstanding academic record with a strong record of publications in academic outlets and significant experience in teaching. Applicants may wish to refer to the description of relevant academic responsibilities in the Letter of Understanding – Indigenous Faculty Members in the UWOFA Collective Agreement. The successful candidates will join a transdisciplinary network of collaborative Indigenous researchers across Western University and will have an opportunity to shape partnerships with our University and community stakeholders at the local, provincial, national and international levels.

The selected candidate will be nominated by The University of Western Ontario to apply for the Tier 2 CRC in Indigenous Literatures of Turtle Island. The Tier 2 CRC is for a five-year term, renewable once.   This academic appointment is NOT conditional upon the successful award of the CRC to the candidate.

In accordance with the regulations set for Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs (, Tier 2 chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., candidates must have less than 10 years of experience as an active researcher in their field at the time of nomination). The Department of English and Writing Studies is housed in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. It offers undergraduate curricula across a wide range of subject areas, including programs in English Studies, Writing Studies, Film Studies, Theatre Studies, and Medieval Studies. The Department also offers both a masters and a doctoral degree and is home to innovative award-winning research and teaching across both traditional and emergent fields.
