The Academic and Technical Writing Program at the University of Victoria (https://www.uvic.ca/humanities/atwp/index.php) invites applications for a continuing-appointment eligible position at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor to commence 1 July 2021. The successful candidate will be appointed into the Faculty of Humanities.
The primary responsibilities of the position are as follows:
- To teach courses that fulfill or are closely allied with the University’s Academic Writing Requirement (AWR): ATWP 101 (Fundamentals of Academic Literacy), ATWP 135 (Academic Reading and Writing), ENGR 110 (Design and Communication 1), ENGR 120 (Design and Communication 2), and/or ENGR 240 (Technical Writing);
- To work with a team of instructors and faculty to develop and deliver new course offerings;
- To help support the professional development and training of new instructors, including graduate students.

Normally, the teaching assignment for an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Faculty of Humanities is 7 courses per academic year (which may be distributed on a 3-3-1 schedule); course releases are associated with some administrative and service roles.
The successful candidate must have
- An advanced degree (PhD preferred) in a relevant field (such as Writing Studies, Rhetoric, Composition, Professional Writing, Technical Writing, Linguistics, or English);
- An excellent track record of teaching university and/or college writing, especially at the first- and/or the second-year level;
- Demonstrated interest in and evidence of engagement with research in areas related to Writing Studies, Rhetoric, Composition, and/or Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
- The ability to work both collaboratively and independently within a complex program.
- Commitment to service, particularly in the form of curriculum development and instructor training, as a valuable part of academic work.
- Interest in ongoing learning and professional development in the field of Academic and/or Technical Writing.
The following will be considered assets:
- Demonstrated teaching experience with and/or research interest in student writers for whom English is an Additional Language;
- Demonstrated teaching experience with Indigenous students and/or research interest in Indigenous pedagogies;
- Evidence of effectiveness in academic service, administrative, and/or academic leadership roles;
- Published research in Writing Studies or a related field;
- Demonstrated experience with teaching online and/or hybrid courses;
- Experience working as a professional or technical writer.
