Applicants are invited for a full-time tenure track appointment at the Assistant Professor rank in Canadian Theatre Studies with an emphasis on the study of contemporary practices (Canadian plays and production, Theatre History and Criticism, Indigenous Theatre are among the many possible primary interests). We appreciate secondary expertise in Performance Studies (such as New Dramaturgies, Ecology and Performance, Diasporic Theatre, etc.). The appointment is effective July 1, 2016.

The position will engage primarily with the Department’s BA, BA Honours, MA, MFA, and PhD programs. The successful applicant will teach and supervise students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including Honours Essays, MA, and PhD theses. As part of teaching responsibilities, there will be opportunities for studio-based courses. While the emphasis is on critical research and publication, creative activity of quality will also be recognized. Members of faculty are also required to assume appropriate administrative and leadership responsibilities. Excellent funding opportunities are available for investigation/experimentation/research in the successful candidate’s areas of expertise. Faculty may also participate in interdisciplinary research activities.

The successful candidate will have:

• A PhD degree in theatre/performance studies
• University-level teaching experience
• A record of publication
• Evidence of a coherent program of research, with a strong critical basis
• An understanding of the interaction of theory and performance and capacity to engage students and faculty in a dynamic exchange between theatrical research and practice. We are particularly interested in applicants with a strong critical research profile and a collaborative performance practice; please address this expectation explicitly in your cover letter and teaching dossier

The Department of Drama offers programs leading to BA and BA Honours, which emphasize a liberal arts education through the interplay of theatre practice and critical theory. We also offer conservatory programs leading to BFA degrees in Acting, Design, and Technical Theatre and MFA degrees in Directing, Design, Theatre Practice, and Theatre Voice Pedagogy. The MA program (Thesis and Course-Based) focuses on critical theory, performance studies, and dramaturgy; the PhD in Performance Studies is now in its fourth year, and has a multi-disciplinary disposition. Graduates from all programs have identifiable records of achievement on a national and international scale. There will be opportunities for interaction with all areas of the Department, including guest artists and scholars.

The Fine Arts Building, with four performance spaces for Drama, was designed specifically for the teaching of theatre arts, music and visual arts. The adjacent Timms Centre for the Arts is a separate and highly acclaimed theatre complex, which opened in March 1995. The university library has the second largest collection in Canada, with strong collections in Canadian Theatre, and Quebec theatre in translation. Periodical holdings and databases on comparative theatre are among the most complete in the country. Further, the city of Edmonton is well known for its collegial and thriving theatre community.
