In Memoriam: Renate Eigenbrod

ACCUTE members will be immeasurably saddened by the passing, on Thursday May 8th, of  Renate Eigenbrod, Professor of Aboriginal Literatures and Head of Native Studies at the University of Manitoba.  Long-standing member of our association, passionate researcher and teacher of Aboriginal literatures and cultures in Canada, a constant participant at Congress, Renate Eigenbrod was also a compellingly enabling mentor to a generation of new scholars, a devoted friend to many in the national and international academic community, and a committed activist for Aboriginal recognition, equity, and inclusion in Canada.  She was a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for our scholarly journal English Studies in Canada, and one of her recent essays – “’For the child taken, for the parent left behind’:  Residential School Narratives as Acts of ‘Survivance’” – appeared in the December 2012 ESC special issue on “Childhood and its Discontents”.  A longer notice will appear in ESC in a forthcoming issue.
