Teaching Position Available – 2020/21 and 2021/22
LITERARY THEORY
Two-Year Term Adjunct

Department of English
Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario CANADA K7L 3N6

The Department of English at Queen’s University invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a two-year Term Adjunct position in Literary Theory for the 2020/21 and 2021/22 school years. The successful applicant will teach two courses in each of the four terms for which they are hired. In 2020/21, the teaching assignments for this position will be: ENGL 292: Introduction to Literary Criticism and Theory (a two-term lecture course with a maximum enrolment of 99); and two one-term fourth-year undergraduate seminars (maximum enrolment of 28). The fourth-year seminars should have a strong theoretical component, but this can be woven into an analysis of literary and cultural texts from any given historical period and geographical region. The successful applicant’s teaching assignment in the second year (2021/22) will resemble that of the first year, but may include different assignments (such as a graduate seminar). Applicants must have a Ph.D., or a confirmed defence date that precedes the start of this appointment on July 1, 2020, as well as teaching experience at the university level. Evidence of potential for research excellence and experience with service at the university level will also be considered assets.

The University invites applications from all qualified individuals. Queen’s University is committed to employment equity and diversity in the workplace and welcomes applications from women, visible minorities, Aboriginal people, persons with disabilities, and LGBTQ persons. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.

The University will provide support in its recruitment processes to applicants with disabilities, including accommodation that takes into account an applicant’s accessibility needs. If you require accommodation during this process, please contact: Karen Donnelly, Administrative Assistant, Department of English, donnelly@queensu.ca or 613-533-6000, ext. 74445.

The academic staff at Queen’s University are governed by the Collective Agreement between the Queen’s University Faculty Association (QUFA) and the University, which is posted at https://www.queensu.ca/facultyrelations/sites/webpublish.queensu.ca.frowww/files/files/QUFA%20CA%202019-22%20amended%20July%2015%202019.pdf.

To comply with Federal laws, the University is obliged to gather statistical information about how many applicants for each job vacancy are Canadian citizens / permanent residents of Canada.  Applicants need not identify their country of origin or citizenship, however, all applications must include one of the following statements: “I am a Canadian citizen / permanent resident of Canada”; OR, “I am not a Canadian citizen / permanent resident of Canada”. Applications that do not include this information will be deemed incomplete.

Applications should include:

  • a complete and current curriculum vitae;
  • letters of reference from at least two (2) and no more than three (3) referees;
  • one (1) course description for a year-long (24 week) second-year lecture course on Literary Criticism and Theory, as well as two or three (2-3) course descriptions for semester-long (12 week) fourth-year undergraduate seminars;
  • and a cover letter outlining the applicant’s suitability for the position.

Further evidence of teaching excellence can be supplied in the form of a teaching dossier. Please arrange to have applications and supporting letters sent by email only to:

Additional information about the Department of English can be found at http://www.queensu.ca/englishSpecific descriptions of undergraduate courses currently being offered in our department (including fourth-year seminars) can be found at https://www.queensu.ca/english/english-undergraduate-courses-19-20). ENGL 292 is not being taught this year, but the general description of the course in the Queen’s Academic Calendar is as follows: “Introduction to Literary Criticism and Theory. Emphasizes literary, rhetorical, and critical terminology, the variety of critical approaches, and the ways in which critical practices (e.g., of editing, interpretation, or evaluation) are related to literary theory. Surveys works of literary theory ranging from ancient to contemporary times.” In constructing their own course descriptions for ENGL 292, applicants should not be overly concerned with trying to mirror this general description (the course does not, for instance, have to be organized as a historical survey).
