Job: Instructor, tenure track, Feminist Media Studies and Popular Culture (UBC; review begins: 16 July 2019)

The Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice at UBC – Vancouver ( invites applications for a tenure-track Educational Leadership position in Feminist Media Studies and Popular Culture at the rank of Instructor. The position entails a teaching load of six 3-credit courses per year (18 credits).

As this is a tenure-track position, the successful candidate will be reviewed for reappointment, tenure, and promotion in subsequent years, in accordance with the Collective Agreement. For a description of the Instructor rank and criteria for reappointment and promotion, please click here

Candidates from a variety of relevant Ph.D. programs in arts or humanities are welcome to apply, including but not limited to: English, Women’s and/or Gender and/or Transgender Studies, Sexuality Studies, Feminist Studies, African Studies, Diaspora and Transnational Studies, History, Interdisciplinary Studies, Communications, and Media and/or Cultural Studies. An intersectional Social Justice Studies emphasis on gender, sexuality, race, and anti-racist pedagogy, is required. Candidates’ doctoral research and coursework should be focused on Feminist Media Studies and Popular Culture Studies with an area of specialization including any of the following: Science fiction, gender studies, theories of embodiment and body modification, and/or social media & digital storytelling. A commitment to and involvement in decolonizing knowledge projects is required. We welcome applicants from a wide range of fields and disciplines. Experience in teaching online and the development of Online Learning curriculum is required.

We seek a dynamic scholar and collaborative colleague with expertise or evidence of potential in teaching and educational leadership (curriculum development & pedagogical innovation) expertise related to feminist media studies in combination with a commitment/involvement in decolonizing knowledge projects that are relevant to the growing diversity of Canadian society and the consequences of globalism, neoliberalism and transnationalism.

The GRSJ Institute ( is currently building capacity in feminist media and literature. Opportunities exist to contribute to the development of graduate and undergraduate curriculum as well as collaborations with initiatives in the Faculty of Arts specifically, and UBC morebroadly. 

Major criteria in selection will be demonstration or promise of excellence in educational leadership and undergraduate teaching in Gender and Sexuality Studies.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach a range of undergraduate courses in the Institute, and to contribute interdisciplinary expertise and leadership to ongoing curriculum, program development, and other teaching and learning initiatives. Experience with undergraduate advising and administration of programming will be considered an asset.
