Emily Carr University of Art + Design invites applications for a new full-time faculty position of Multilingual Learning Specialist. The successful candidate will develop and maintain support programs for students, staff and faculty in the area of supporting multilingual students. This position will work in collaboration with both the Writing Centre and the Teaching and Learning Centre.
Reporting to the Dean of Culture and Community, this position will directly support multilingual students at the undergraduate and graduate level as well as build staff and faculty awareness and expertise in pedagogical practices for multilingual students.
While the primary emphasis of our current support is in the area of writing, support for reading, listening and speaking will be necessary sites of future development.
The Emily Carr Writing Centre is a key resource in coordinating co-curricular instruction and support for our many multilingual students. The Writing Centre works closely with faculty instructors, student teaching assistants, student services staff, administration, and individual undergraduate and graduate students to maintain a network of support and advancement in areas of writing and language development.
The Multilingual Learning Specialist will participate in all activities of the writing centre, including, but not limited to:
- Individual and small group tutoring;
- Designing and delivering workshops for students;
- Facilitating reading, writing and speaking groups;
- Planning and conducting training using the best practices of multilingual writing pedagogy for Emily Carr peer tutors;
- Developing resources (handouts, videos, etc.) on topics affecting linguistically diverse students;
- Working closely with the Coordinator of the Writing Centre to support ongoing and develop new programs for multilingual students;
- Participating in related research and assessment initiatives for the Writing Centre.
In addition, the Multilingual Learning Specialist will work with the Teaching and Learning Centre to:
- plan and deliver workshops or other supports for Emily Carr faculty in the areas of assignment design, curriculum design, and assessment as these topics relate to multilingual students;
- work with faculty on curriculum to support the progression and development of multilingual students;
- collaborate with other staff on campus on admissions and retention initiatives for multilingual students.
Required qualifications:
- An advanced degree (PhD preferred) in a relevant discipline—Composition Studies, Second Language Acquisition, Applied Linguistics, Language and Literacy, English, etc.—ideally with a specialization in second language writing;
- Experience (minimum three years) teaching writing to linguistically and culturally diverse students at the post-secondary level;
- Experience (minimum two years) teaching advanced language acquisition or writing in English to students in one-on-one settings;
- Evidence of research into theories of language acquisition, second-language writing pedagogy and/or best practices in English language teaching;
- Ability to work as a member of a diverse community.
Desired qualifications (the following, while not required, would be considered assets):
- Experience working in faculty development and/or education;
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with faculty and other members of the academic community on planning and development of student academic support and/or curriculum;
- Experience teaching speaking and listening in a post-secondary context;
- Familiarity with the programs of study of an art, media and design context.
Faculty at Emily Carr are also expected to contribute to the fabric and future of the University through participation on administrative committees, graduate student supervision, research/professional practice, and student advising as well as attendance at events that demonstrate an active engagement with the Emily Carr community.
