Faculty in CREW at VIU offer a wide range of courses to interest any student wishing to develop skills in the written arts. From formal poetry to writing for young adults, and from book editing to digital journalism, our program is diverse and adaptable. Our faculty are award-winning writers who are active in the literary culture of the country and who work to provide opportunities for our students to engage with literature through our experiential classrooms, our visiting writers series, and other active programs. Duties
The Creative Writing and Journalism Department is seeking a Limited Term Contract instructor to teach each the following courses at the Nanaimo Campus:
Fall 2021 semester:
CREW 140: Intro to Writing Drama (Mondays, 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.)
An introduction to the basic structures and approaches in the writing of plays, TV scripts, and film scripts. Analysis and discussion of professional work will form and develop guidelines for effective criticism and revision of student writing.
CREW 240: Writing Short-Form Scripts for the Stage, Screen or Television (Mondays, 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.)
A workshop course in writing short-form stage plays, television scripts, and screenplays.
Spring 2022 semester:
CREW 140: Intro to Writing Drama (Tuesdays, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.)
An introduction to the basic structures and approaches in the writing of plays, TV scripts, and film scripts. Analysis and discussion of professional work will form and develop guidelines for effective criticism and revision of student writing.
CREW 442: Script Development Workshop (Tuesdays, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.)
A lab course in which students will complete and/or produce portions of an original script for stage, film, TV or radio, with the guidance and support of the instructor.
Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree required in a relevant field such as theatre play writing, screen writing, television writing, film studies or theatre studies from an appropriately accredited institution, or equivalent;
- Minimum five years’ experience in professional stage and/or screen craft, with experience in both preferred;
- A strong record of publications and/or professional productions;
- Post-secondary teaching experience;
- Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work both independently and in a team; and to teach both face to face classes and online;
- Able to work evenings when required.
Preferred Qualifications
MA or MFA in a relevant discipline from an appropriately accredited institution. Experience teaching/writing Indigenous forms of storytelling and/or dramatization would be a strong asset.
