SENIOR EDITOR
The Walrus Foundation, publisher of The Walrus—Canada’s celebrated magazine of ideas and culture—and thewalrus.ca, has an opening for a senior editor. This staff position is full time at the Walrus Foundation office in downtown Toronto. The senior editor reports to the deputy editor.
Responsibilities
- Participate in editorial, production, and story meetings
- Generate story ideas for print and digital platforms
- Commission and edit long-form features, profiles, front-of-book articles, and web stories
- Mentor and assist in training Walrus Fellows and university interns
Qualifications
- Minimum five years of senior editing experience with a magazine, publishing house, newspaper, or online publication
- Strong familiarity with The Walrus’s print and digital profile
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a willingness to collaborate
- Facility with The Chicago Manual of Style, The Canadian Oxford Dictionary, and standard editing tools (we use MS Office and InDesign/InCopy)
- Familiarity with the structure, mission, and activities of the charitable non-profit Walrus Foundation, including our educational mandate, events, and supporters
- A cross-Canada perspective on news and culture, with a diverse range of contacts and sources
- General knowledge of current affairs and the North American media landscape. Specialized knowledge in Canadian politics, public policy, geography, arts and culture, and literature are assets
- Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to teamwork
- A keen sense of integrity and high journalistic standards
- The ability to work in a multi-tasking and deadline-oriented environment
