Position Summary:
We invite applications for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship valued at $45,000 per year (plus benefits) in the area of audio data processing, archiving, and curation. The Fellowship will commence July 1, 2020, and will contribute to a multidisciplinary team as part of the national SpokenWeb project, a SSHRC-funded Partnership Grant.
Reporting to Professor Michael O’Driscoll, Department of English & Film Studies, and to Sean Luyk, University of Alberta Libraries, this fellowship aims to engage an emerging scholar in cross-over fields including areas such as Sound Studies, Digital Media, Digital Humanities, Archival Studies, Library and Information Science, Literary Studies, and Cultural Studies. Working in coordination with the University of Alberta Libraries and disciplinary experts in the Faculty of Arts, the Fellow will conduct activities such as:
- supervise and manage a workflow that supports the preservation of and access to literary sound recordings for research and teaching purposes
- supervise research assistants in documenting and archiving the recordings at UAlberta
- conduct audio signal analysis and/or data mining on SpokenWeb contents
- manage the development of a UofA SpokenWeb web site with a focus on improving the interactive elements of SpokenWeb
- contribute to a podcast series at UofA on literary sound recording
- develop, in collaboration with the Digital Scholarship Centre, workshops and training modules for researchers at UAlberta and in the SpokenWeb network
- develop papers and articles based upon the work described above
In addition, the ability to develop collaborative research and mentorship efforts with other research fields on campus (eg. Linguistics, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning), and to participate in the activities of multidisciplinary initiatives such as the Digital Scholarship Centre and the Sound Studies Institute, will be considered an asset.
Qualifications:
The Postdoctoral Fellow will hold a PhD in one of the fields identified above, or in a cognate field relevant to the PDF research program description, and a record of publication demonstrating active engagement in research. The Fellow will have an interest in the exploration and development of durational media research methods relevant to the study of literature and literary performance. The Fellow will have knowledge of the digital tools relevant to the production and processing of audio data within digital environments.The Fellow will have an interest in pursuing collaborative research and in developing leadership skills within a large interdisciplinary research network.
Eligibility requirements
- Applicants must not currently hold a postdoctoral appointment at the University of Alberta
- Applicants must have completed their PhD within the past three years, or must have their doctoral degree completed by no later than June 30, 2020
