The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is looking for an outstanding and creative individual to join our faculty team. The Professor will be responsible for curriculum leadership and teaching in the area of Postcolonial Studies within the School of Communication and Literary Studies. The successful candidate will ideally have specialization in World Literature, South Asian Literature, or Caribbean Literature, and an interdisciplinary approach to their studies. The Professor will be expected to participate in course development within his/her area of discipline. The Professor will develop an effective learning environment for students as well as respect the individual learning styles and diverse cultural and educational backgrounds of students and will have a strong publishing record in literary studies and a willingness to develop an applied research program or engage with undergraduate research in a postsecondary environment.The Professor will be committed to working in a team environment that supports distinctive programming.
Sheridan faculty provide academic leadership to programs and courses within their areas of expertise and contribute to the creation of a learning-centred environment where students can develop to their full potential. They also contribute to College, Faculty and program excellence by collaborating on a variety of initiatives such as new program development, applied research and alternative delivery strategies.
Professors are responsible for:
- Ensuring that program and course curricula are current, relevant and reflective of best practices within the field of literary studies and communications;
- Defining, evaluating and validating learning outcomes for courses and programs;
- Creating an effective environment for learning which accommodates students’ diverse cultural and educational backgrounds, experiences and individual learning styles;
- Designing appropriate strategies and tools for facilitating and assessing student learning that are invitational and reflective of best practices in teaching and learning;
- Developing appropriate strategies and tools to assess student performance that are consistent with the learning outcomes of the course and address multiple learning styles;
- Developing multi-media materials and alternative delivery strategies, and incorporating appropriate educational technologies into the learning process;
- Ensuring that students are aware of course and program learning outcomes, learning strategies and evaluation techniques;
- Providing individual tutoring and academic counselling; and evaluate student progress/achievement within assigned courses.
- D. in Postcolonial Studies (or related area) is required; specialization in World Literatures or South Asian or Caribbean Literature preferred;
- Solid record of accomplishment in publishing in the areas of specialization required;
- Experience teaching a range of introductory undergraduate courses in literary studies and communications, including composition and rhetoric;
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the post-secondary level, with a minimum of three years’ teaching experience preferred;
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
- Demonstrable ability to convey the conceptual and applied aspects of knowledge to a broad range of students;
- Committed to excellence in teaching and learning and to working within a team environment.
