Assistant Professor – Nineteenth-Century American Literature – 1401644

The Department of English and Drama at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) invites applications for a tenure-stream appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of Nineteenth-Century American Literature. The appointment will commence on July 1, 2015.

Research and teaching interests in all areas of the field will be considered but we are especially interested in candidates with a specialization in African-American literature, the history of the book, transatlantic/transnational studies, gender studies, and/or queer studies.

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in a related field by July 1, 2015 or soon thereafter and be prepared to teach American literature pre-1900 across the major genres. In particular, the successful candidate would regularly teach a second-year general American literature survey. Clear evidence of excellence in both research and teaching is required; a significant publication record would be advantageous. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate will also become a full member of the Graduate Department of English, which consists of faculty from the University’s three campuses (UTM, U of T Scarborough, and U of T St. George). Duties will consist of research; the supervision of PhD dissertations; and teaching undergraduate courses at the Mississauga campus and graduate classes at the St. George campus.
