Michael Bérubé defends the discipline…

Michael Bérubé argues that the skills you learn in English Studies “… are useful – and transferable – anywhere there is thinking to be done.” One of those places, he notes, is in the Chairman’s Office of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Bérubé’s January 4th defense of the discipline is showing up everywhere on social media.  But is his “skill set” argument for “value” in the humanities our best claim for the importance of what we do?  Does a capacity for the critical reading of literature lead as easily to the war room as it does to social justice and equity?  Give us your thoughts.
